Mountain Summit – Memorial plaques, cairns and litter
The John Muir Trust, owner of the summit of Ben Nevis, carries out a number of conservation activities on Ben Nevis summit in association with the Nevis Partnership
Memorial plaques that were gathered around the summit cairn have been removed to restore some of the wild character of the summit. These plaques have been restored to the families who placed them where possible. Records of these memorials and new memorials can now be viewed here (link to memeorial webpage) .The Nevis Partnership have created a site of contemplation in Glen Nevis close to the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre with views of the Ben as an alternative to placing memorial plaques on the summit. Please follow this link for more detailed information http://www.nevispartnership.co.uk/memorials.asp
Work Parties of volunteers for The John Muir Trust carry out a number of litter picks every year on the summit. Last year over 40 bags of rubbish were brought down over the year. In addition these work parties have tackled the survey and recording of over 100 cairns prior to a way marking strategy being developed and now assist with dismantling some of these cairns. They also carry out monitoring of the recovery of the lichen communities on the summit. If you'd like to get involved or require further information, please contact the John Muir Trust Conservation Officer for Ben/Glen Nevis by e mailing nevis@jmt.org
